Shock as speedway star Danny Ayres dies
Former Mildenhall Fen Tigers speedway star Danny Ayres has died.
Ayres, 33, who was born in Bury St Edmunds, was one of the sport's great entertainers.
An official statement on the British Speedway website said: "We are devastated to learn of the passing of British rider Danny Ayres.
"Danny has always been an entertainer and his loss will be felt throughout the sport in Great Britain.
"He has been preparing for the forthcoming season with Premiership Ipswich and Scunthorpe in the Championship.
"Our thoughts are with Danny’s family at this most difficult of times."
Only three weeks ago, Ayres had vowed to treat fans of the Ipswich Witches to plenty of showman style antics after agreeing his dream move to the Premiership outfit.
The former Fen Tiger was planning to double up his Championship commitments with the Scunthorpe Scorpions by taking up one of the two reserve berths at the Witches.
Ayres said at the time: “This is a massive year for me and being part of the Ipswich team can help take my career to the next level.
“I’m a racer and a showman and I love what I do.
“If I can bring smiles to people’s faces riding a bike and put just one extra person on a seat to come watch me, that’s my job done.”
