Newmarket Rugby Club aiming to reach Cambridgeshire Intermediate Cup final

Newmarket Rugby Club head coach Martyn Wall believes that winning this season’s Cambridgeshire Intermediate Cup would be a fitting ‘recognition’ of the recent hard work at the club.

A win over visiting Cambridge III on Saturday (2pm) will see the Scaltback side book their place in the final of the competition against the winner of the other semi-final between Cottenham Renegades and Cantabrigian II.

Wall said: “It is a big game. We want to do well in every game and when you reach a semi-final, you want to go on and win the whole competition.

“It is a good chance to win some silverware, which has not happened for the club for a long while.

“We are getting to a good place on and off the pitch, so winning a trophy would be recognition of all the hard work over the last couple of years.

“For the lads to have something tangible to celebrate would be fantastic, but having said all that we will not be taking anything for granted at the weekend.

“Cambridge are a familiar side to us and we know each other pretty well.

“They are probably the biggest side in a physical sense and they will probably be looking for some revenge after we beat them in the league. We are under no illusions that it is going to be a tough game.”

Following the conclusion of the weekend’s match up, Newmarket will switch their focus to the second phase of the league campaign in the Division One Shield.

Wall’s side will pit themselves against Colchester III, Cottenham, North Walsham II, Norwich Union and Sudbury Talbots, with the head coach setting his sights on promotion.

“We want to go up and to do that we need to finish in the top two, which looks realistic,” he said.

“We faced a lot of these sides last year and did well. Obviously it is going to be a step up in standard but I am confident we will be in the mix.”
