Newmarket Cricket Club pick up first win of the season ahead of Racing & Trainers XI fixture
For the first time this season, Newmarket Cricket Club’s first team players awoke on Sunday morning with that winning feeling.
It has been a tough Whitings LLP Cambs & Hunts Premier League Division One campaign so far for the Stampede, who up until the weekend had failed to register a single victory.
Yet, they got off the mark in style with a 184-run home trouncing of bottom-of-the-table March Town.
Captain Mark Nunn, who top scored with 84 not out and also took three wickets, said: “I’m delighted. We’ve done some good things in games and had good periods, but we’ve not put it altogether in one performance. We were strong with the bat, strong with the ball and excellent in the field.
“Hopefully this is the catalyst for us to kick on and get some more wins.
“It should have given us some belief and confidence because it was a massive win.
“We have to find a way to start winning more games. We can’t keep just playing well in spells, so hopefully Saturday is just the start.”
This Saturday, second-from-bottom Newmarket will visit third-placed Ramsey (12pm).
Meanwhile, on Sunday, the club will host the annual Racing & Trainers XI charity match, in association with Racing Welfare.
The likes of George Boughey, George Scott, Ed Dunlop and Thady Gosden are all set to feature in the fixture, with gates opening at 12pm.
“It’s the third time we’ve hosted the game but the first at our new ground in Dullingham. We can’t wait to host everyone,” added Nunn.
“We’d especially like to thank William Jarvis (chairman of the Newmarket Trainers Federation) for his invaluable support once again with the match.”
The day will include an outdoor bar serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, food, a silent auction, a raffle and activities for children.
