Rumble Inthejungle hunting more Royal Ascot glory for Richard Spencer in the Commonwealth Cup

‘Last year he was a boy, now he is a man’ – that is Newmarket trainer Richard Spencer’s assessment of his Royal Ascot hope Rumble Inthejungle.

The Cheveley Park Stud and Rebel Racing-owned colt is due to go in tomorrow’s Group 1 Commonwealth Cup (3.40pm), for which he was widely regarded as a 16/1 shot when the Journal went to print.

Winner of the Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood in August, he was last seen finishing third to Ten Sovereigns and Jash – both Commonwealth Cup contenders – in the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket last September.

Rumble Inthejungle will be the only horse in the race making his seasonal debut, but that is not something that concerns Spencer, who has seen plenty of improvement over recent months.

“He did a very pleasing bit of work at Newmarket and the team at home have got him in great shape,” said Sefton Lodge Stables’ Spencer.

“I like to think he has come on from last year. He is a fresh horse and we are confident he will put on a good show.

“He was slow to come to hand after the winter and that is why we have given him a bit of time.

“We wanted him to be in A1 shape and this was the right route to take.

“He is a bigger horse, a stronger horse. He was like a boy last year and now he is a like a man – he has really filled his frame.

“Having a horse like him going for such a big race is what everybody wants. It is great for the yard, great for the owners and great for Cheveley Park Stud.”

Spencer, who already has a Royal Ascot winner on his CV thanks to Rajasinghe’s triumph in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes in 2017, will be taking his biggest ever team of horses to the meeting this week.

Too Shy Shy – a daughter of Kodiac – was due to run in yesterday’s Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes, while Alabama Whitman will feature in tomorrow’s Group 3 Albany Stakes (2.30pm).

On debut last month, the two-year-old finished second to Ivatheengine in the Visit marathonbet.co.uk Novice Auction Stakes at Windsor.

Also on Friday, Spencer is set to be doubly represented in the Wokingham Stakes (5pm) by 33/1 chances California Love and Stay Classy.
