Newmarket Cricket Club continue positive start to new Onyx League Division Two season with victory over Godmanchester Town

Newmarket (242-9) made it four wins from five outings at the start of the new Onyx League Division Two season with an 82-run triumph at the expense of Godmanchester Town (160) on Saturday.

The victory has left the Stampede sitting in third position in the early standings, eight points adrift of second-placed St Ives Town & Warboys and 23 points behind pace setters Southill Park.

Against Godmanchester, Newmarket skipper Mark Nunn won the toss and opted to bat first at Dullingham.

However, when openers Abdullah Jadoon (6) and Albert Scott (2) both fell in the opening stages to leave Newmarket struggling on 9-2, he may have been wondering if he had made the right decision.

Overseas all-rounder Kieran Lloyd (23) steadied the innings to a degree, but it was not until Maxford Pipe and Udana Ranathunga came together at the crease that runs started to flow more freely.

Pipe top scored for the home side with 71 runs from 86 deliveries, while Ranathunga remained unbeaten on 66. And there was also some useful late runs added by Freddie Statham, who made 20.

In reply, Godmanchester’s openers Christopher Seton-Rogers (26) and James Sykes (28) got their side off to a solid start.

But Lloyd (3-40) quickly removed three of Godmanchester’s top four batsmen, and from then on Newmarket were in control.

Statham (2-42), Nunn (1-35) and Albert Scott (1-38) also got in on the wicket-taking act before Tom Brame (3-14) mopped up the visitors’ tail to secure the victory.
