Newmarket Cricket Club finalise 2022 squad with arrival of two Caribbean players

Newmarket have completed their winter business with the addition of two more players.

The last few months have been busy for captain Mark Nunn, who has been building a squad he hopes will be competitive in Division One of the Cambs & Hunts Whiting & Partners League following last term’s promotion.

And he believes the arrival of batsman Jensen Henry and bowler Andre Fullers from Foxton Granta – taking the tally of arrivals to six – leaves The Stampede in good shape ahead of the season opener at home to Old Leysians on April 30.

“We’ve been quite busy, strengthened with six players and I think that will be us all wrapped up now,” said Nunn.

“I don’t see anything else happening unless there is something we’re not expecting.

“Last year we were a decent side and picked up plenty of good results but at times we were having to rely on four, five or six players.

“But now, with the signings we’ve made, I feel like there is a really good balance across the whole team and we’ve got cover in all areas.

“It adds plenty of competition alongside the players from last season and while some may drop down into the seconds, it doesn’t mean there’s no way back. If players perform well then they will get their chance.”

On the two most recent additions, both of whom hail from the Caribbean, Nunn added: “We’ve managed to bring in an opening batsman and an opening bowler which is something we were keen to do.

“They’ve both been at training and are already integrating well into the squad. They’ll give us some real strength in depth going forward.”

Meanwhile, Henry said: “I am so happy to join Newmarket CC, I was impressed by their team last year considering it was only the first season the club was formed.

"I have been made to feel very welcome from the start and am excited for the season to start.”

And fellow new arrival Fullers added: “I am so pleased to be joining such a progressive cricket club. They have a fantastic set=up, work ethic and also a great bunch of guys to enjoy cricket with – I can’t wait to get started.”

Newmarket will play their first pre-season fixture of 2022 on Saturday when they travel to face Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship Division Two outfit Haverhill (12pm).
