Newmarket Rugby Club stretch lead at the top of Eastern Counties League Greene King 1 West with victory over Shelford III

After losing for the first time this season last time out, Newmarket bounced back on Saturday by recording a 44-19 victory over Shelford III on Saturday.

The defeat to March had cut Newmarket’s lead at the summit to just one point, but the weekend’s win has seen that advantage doubled.

The visitors were in the driving seat from the whistle and all the play was in the home team’s end.

In the 10th minute Danny Boyle made a pick-up and scored on the far right of the pitch.

The position did not deter Michael Reeves, either, as he slotted the ball through the posts.

Shelford started to respond and mounted a series of attacks, but Newmarket’s rearguard stood firm and on the 20-minute mark Callum Laing broke through to score, with Reeves converting for a 14-0 lead.

Three minutes later Newmarket took a quick penalty which released Harry Robbins down the right wing, before he passed inside to Michael Palmer to touch down.

Michael Reeves’ kick shaved the post and fell the wrong side, but he made amends shortly after by running in a try and although the conversion was again off target, Newmarket went into the break 24 points to the good and with a bonus point already wrapped up.

There was a lack of a momentum at the start of the second half, but it came to life when Robbins scorched down the centre of the pitch, leaving the Shelford defenders trailing in his wake as he touched down under the posts to give Reeves a routine kick.

Dan Johnson was next to get in on the act with a try – converted by Reeves – and while Shelford scored a couple of consolation tries, Newmarket captain Max Bell also added his name to the scoresheet to rubber stamp his team’s victory.

Newmarket return to home comforts tomorrow when third-placed Saffron Walden II will be the visitors to their Scaltback base (2pm).
