Ely Tigers overcome Storm Dennis and Thetford in London 3 Eastern Counties

Neither Storm Dennis nor Thetford were able to halt Ely Tigers at the Cambridge Commodities Park on Saturday.

In what was a game that saw third play host to fourth in London 3 Eastern Counties, it was the Tigers who came out on top 15-0 – a result that opened up a seven-point gap between the teams.

Both sides struggled with the conditions early on and it took 23 minutes for the deadlock to be broken.

A break involving Jacob Muncey, Charlie Coupland and Joel Scott Paul saw the latter release Byron Reed, who raced towards the try line.

Reed was held up just yards out, but the ball was released to captain Matt McCarthy to dot down. Scott Paul was unable to add the conversion because of the wind, and that ended up being the only score of the first half.

Ely's second try of proceedings came after the restart via Nathan Brooks, with the conditions once again getting the better of Scott Paul's kick.

Scott Paul sent Reed clear on the wing to add the home side's third try of the afternoon, but despite Jake Alsop taking on the kicking responsibilities, the wind once again moved the ball away from the posts.

Ely, who are 21 points adrift of league-leading West Norfolk, will return to action on Saturday with a trip to Thurston (2pm). The Suffolk side currently occupy ninth place.
