Newmarket trainers give good account of themselves in charity match against town’s cricket club

Sunday’s annual charity encounter between Newmarket Cricket Club and the Racing & Trainers XI proved to be a closely-fought contest.

It was the cricketers that once again came out on top, extending their winning run to four after a 15-run triumph against a team containing the likes of George Scott, Charlie Fellowes, George Boughey and Ed Crisford.

Funds raised from the event in Dullingham will go to the Newmarket Housing Trust and the cricket club.

Meanwhile, 24 hours earlier on Saturday, Newmarket’s (123) hopes of securing promotion from the Onyx League Division Two were dented by their four-wicket home defeat against Upwood (125-6).

Batting first after losing the toss, captain Mark Nunn top scored for Newmarket with his knock of 34 runs, while opener Ziaf Kulasi weighed in with 22.

But despite the best efforts of bowler Freddie Statham, who recorded bowling figures of 3-28 from his 10- over stint, the visitors reached their target in one ball shy of 33 overs.

The defeat has left the third-placed Stampede 27 points adrift of the two promotion places ahead of their trip to face St Ives & Warboys on Saturday (12pm).
