Three Ultimate Dodge teams book their place at the British Dodgeball Championships in Liverpool
Newmarket-based Ultimate Dodge will once again be triply-represented at this weekend’s British Dodgeball Championships in Liverpool.
The club took its under-11s, under-13s and under-16s squad to last week’s qualifying event in Leicester, with all three coming through with flying colours to secure their spot.
In doing so they will return to a competition in which the under-11s and under-16s collected silver medals 12 months ago, while the under-13s won bronze.
Around half of the players in each of the three teams will be competing in the Championships for the first time, but having come through a changed qualifying format, coach Michael Grant is confident more medals are in the offing.
“In previous years teams have qualified through a league table with the points picked up over the course of a year,” he said.
“This time it was a one-off tournament and any slip up could see you drop down to third and out of the Championships.
“There was more pressure with this being just one event, but the players knew what was at stake and they came through it.
“It will be tight for our under-11s because there is very little between the four sides. They could finish anywhere, but they have a very good chance.
“The under-13s perhaps have the best chance of winning gold, especially with last season’s champions not qualifying after they finished third.
“And hopefully the under-16s will be battling for gold again. They are still young – my starting six are all under 15 years old. But they have experience and that should count for something.”
The East Anglian Vikings and East Anglian Valkyries, both of whom train in Newmarket, will also feature in the senior events having finished second in their respective Super Leagues.
* On Sunday the Vikings will be offering people the chance to try out dodgeball as part of the Red Lodge Sports Taster Day. The event – at Red Lodge Sports Pavilion – will start at 1pm.
