Great Britain’s leading female jockey Hayley Turner has announced a surprise one-off return to the saddle.

The 33-year-old, who was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list earlier this month, opted to retire from the sport last November.

However, in a brief U-turn, the Newmarket-based rider has confirmed that she will compete at Ascot’s Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup in August.

Turner has taken the place of Michelle Payne after the Australian was ruled out of the meeting with an abdominal injury.

Nottingham-born Turner has won 761 races in Britain - a haul which included a century of victories in a calendar year.
