Tyler Weaver source of big inspiration for Newmarket Links Golf Club juniors after U.S. Open debut at Oakmont Country Club
Tyler Weaver’s debut performance at the U.S. Open is proof ‘that dreams don’t have to stay as dreams’.
That is according to Jonny Sharkey, who is the senior PGA Professional at The Links Golf Club in Newmarket, where Weaver ‘honed his craft’.
The 20-year-old recorded three birdies during his two rounds, leaving him on +9 for the tournament and only two shots adrift of making the cut at the Oakmont Country Club.
Sharkey said: “Having watched Tyler grow up on our fairways, it was clear from an early age that he had a rare steeliness in the big moments, that’s what sets him apart. Seeing him now compete on the world stage is remarkable, but not surprising.
“To only miss the cut by two shots at one of the toughest golf courses in the world, especially when more established players were posting much higher scores, says a lot about the quality of Tyler’s game.
“I honestly think he now truly believes he belongs in that environment, and most importantly, he didn’t look out of place.
“He carried himself with a real calmness, which is incredibly impressive and speaks volumes about his attitude and maturity. That will be so important for him moving forward.
“The atmosphere at the club has been electric all week. We've had TV crews on site, the clubhouse has been packed with people watching every moment, and our junior section has been truly inspired.
“To see a local lad, someone who honed his craft right here, reach the very top is incredibly powerful. He’s shown that dreams don’t have to stay as dreams. With enough hard work, they can become reality.”
