Denes beach in Southwold saw ‘about 100 dead fish’ wash up on the shore
‘About 100 dead fish’ washed up on a Suffolk shore yesterday according to a conservation authority.
The Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA) and East Suffolk Council have said they received reports of a large number of dead fish, mainly dogfish and smooth-hound, found on the Denes beach in Southwold.
Eastern IFCA said, based on unconfirmed reports, there were an estimated 100 dead fish.
A spokesperson for the council said: “Officers from East Suffolk Services Ltd attended the location on the same day and found just a small number of fish, with a few more appearing overnight into Friday.
“We are monitoring the situation and will remove the fish if necessary, however we do not feel a clean-up operation is required at this stage.”
John Butley, the head operation at Eastern IFCA, said it was an unusual occurrence, but it was unlikely to have been caused by pollution or discard from fishermen.
“We have been talking to colleagues in the marine management organisations to make them aware of the situation,” said John.
For any future wash-up incidents, people are being encouraged to report those via the Eastern IFCA website or call on 01553 775321.
Officers will be sent to the beach for further investigations.
