5 reasons why Southwold is one of the coolest places to live




A Suffolk town has been named amongst the coolest towns in the country.

Naturecan ranked locations across the UK on factors like culture, shops and how 'instagrammable' they are, with Southwold being named 28th in the list.

Here are five reasons why we agree Southwold is one of the coolest places to live...

1. The stunning beaches

Southwold is home to sandy beaches and stunning sea views, with thousands flocking to visit each year.

Whether you're looking to relax by the sea with a backdrop of multicoloured beach huts or take a long stroll on the sand, Southwold's shores are a great place to unwind.

Southwold Pier Beach to the north offers the traditional seaside scene, while the Denes Beach to the south has more rustic wild charm.

There is a beach spot perfect for visitors young and old here, and dogs are allowed outside of restricted months of April-September.

2. Plenty to explore

There is plenty to see and do in Southwold, including a tour of the iconic Adnams distillery.

For £25 per person (over 18s only), the tour includes a tasting session and shows visitors the process from 'grain to glass'.

If this doesn't tickle your fancy, you can wander the quaint streets and pay a visit to the impressive and historic Southwold lighthouse in the centre of the town.

The lighthouse is a waymark for boats and guides them in to Southwold Harbour. Tours can be arranged, here.

Southwold Sailors' Reading Room, as well as the Alfred Corry Lifeboat Museum also offer an opportunity to learn about the town's illustrious history.

3. Places to shop

There are plenty of shops and boutiques to browse in Southwold, with everything from clothing to gifts and trinkets on offer.

The pier is lined with shops including Seaweed and Salt, a boutique selling array of beautiful cards, gifts and clothing.

In the town, Seasalt Cornwall sells coastal-themed homewares, as well as clothing and footwear while Little Pretty in Trinity Street sells goods made by local artists.

4. Places to eat

As well as good shopping destinations, the town is full of tasty places to eat.

Two Magpies Bakery in High Street serves bread, savouries and sweet treats daily, while The Penny Bun Bakehouse at The Box offers their delicious wares every Saturday.

If you're looking for a traditional seaside treat, The Little Fish and Chip Shop is a favourite for visitors, with long queues often forming outside.

Sole Bay Fish Company serves tasty seafood, while The Harbour Inn offers nautical charm with riverside views.

5. Quirky and fun events

Southwold is home to lots of quirky and fun events, including the Sausage Dog Walk.

This record-breaking event, where owners bring their Dachshunds for a beach walk to raise money for charity attracts visitors from all over Suffolk and beyond.

The Christmas Day Swim is another favourite for locals who raise money each year with a dip in the icy sea to see in Christmas morning.
