Sizewell C pledged 500 jobs for Lowestoft as agreement with MP Jess Asato announced
A power station has pledged 500 jobs for a coastal town after an agreement with its MP was announced.
The new deal between Sizewell C and Lowestoft MP Jess Asato means the town will benefit from a raft of clean energy jobs during the construction phase of the nuclear plant.
The pledge is being announced today at Nucleus, the new employability hub at East Coast College opened in partnership with Sizewell C last month.
Jess Asato, MP for Lowestoft, said: “I stood in the election promising that our community would benefit from clean energy jobs, and so I am hugely proud to announce this agreement with Sizewell C.
“This agreement is more than just jobs; it’s about building a foundation of opportunity and investment, from the £250,000 in local partnerships to the life-changing training provided here."
To further support the pledge, Sizewell C will run two community-focused jobs fairs each year to ensure the roles are accessible to all.
This will be supported by recruitment advertising in media in and around the town.
It has previously pledged at least a third of the 7,900 peak construction workforce, around 2,600 jobs, would come from East Anglia.
Julia Pyke, joint managing director of Sizewell C, said: “Lowestoft is an important town for Sizewell C. Through partnerships with East Coast College and Access Community Trust, we’re working to ensure people in the town can access the jobs and career opportunities this project provides.
“Through these strong ties, we’re investing in the people and the skills, the businesses and the organisations that will have a lasting positive impact for Lowestoft.”
Sizewell C has issued around £5 million worth of contracts to suppliers in Lowestoft so far.
It invested £150,000 in the Nucleus hub, as well as £100,000 with ACT to support the SAMS wellbeing hub and café.
