The John Peel Centre in Stowmarket hits new phase of £46k expansion

An independent music venue has reached a new phase of development as £46,000 worth of construction work has begun.

The John Peel Centre for Creative Arts in Stowmarket has been granted the works through a partnership with Mid Suffolk District Council which includes roof improvements and installing a safe means of access.

The iconic venue has extended into 11 Market Place which had been empty since the former NatWest bank closed in September 2017.

This expansion will allow the John Peel Centre to stage more events and is part of the district council’s vision to regenerate Stowmarket and support economic and cultural growth in the town.

Cllr Teresa Davis, Mid Suffolk’s cabinet member for thriving towns and rural communities, said: “We are proud to be working in partnership with the John Peel Centre on this exciting expansion and it’s great to see this work under way.

“The John Peel Centre is a wonderful venue which has been a huge success since opening 14 years ago, gaining a fantastic reputation which attracts visitors from far and wide.

“We know town centres are changing and with the right investment, we can help create a vibrant town centre experience.

“This development will bring even more music, events and entertainment to the town.”

Artist Joel Millerchip was commissioned by the council to create a mural which will be on display at the venue and it was created with the help of youth groups at The Mix in Ipswich Street.

Mid Suffolk District Council’s investment in the venue comes as it continues to work with partners, including Stowmarket Town Council, on a vision for the town which aims to regenerate the town centre and attract more visitors.

Other plans for the town include a new sport, leisure, education, wellbeing and leisure hub and a new Skills and Innovation Centre at Gateway 14.

The John Peel Centre opened its doors in 2011 and has carried the legacy of DJ John Peel supporting new music, up and coming bands, theatre and more.

CEO Sarah Wilkin said: “Our partnership with Mid Suffolk District Council and the works currently taking place at 11 Market Place bring us one exciting step closer to creating an inclusive, accessible space, ensuring everyone can access and benefit from the arts.”
