Rick Wakeman CBE: "I thought it was a hoax", he said upon learning that he was to be made a CBE

Renowned songwriter, producer and presenter Rick Wakeman has revealed that he initially thought an email confirming his CBE had been sent in error.

The 72-year-old, from Scole, in Suffolk, was included in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to music and broadcasting.

A former keyboardist for progressive rock group Yes, Mr Wakeman went on to release numerous solo albums, while also producing music for dozens of artists, alongside soundtracks for several major films.

Speaking about his CBE, which was announced at the end of last week, he said: “When I first received the email about receiving an honour, I genuinely thought it had been sent in error and had to read it twice before believing it was for real and not a hoax.

“Being extremely patriotic, very British and very much a royalist, I will admit to feeling very proud but am also acutely aware that it is the musical gift, that I am lucky enough to have, that has enabled me to reach out through music in so many ways.

“I know that is something that most people would like to be able to do, so I am extremely grateful for that.”
