Cllr David Child elected new town mayor of Stowmarket
A Suffolk town has announced its new mayor who plans to champion young creatives throughout his term.
Cllr David Child has been elected as Stowmarket’s new town mayor following his appointment at today’s Annual Town Meeting.
During his 12-month term, he will support and raise funds for Stowmarket Youth Theatre, helping to deliver free participatory theatre projects for young people aged 14 to 18 through creative programmes at The John Peel Centre for Creative Arts.
He said: “I am deeply honoured to have been elected town mayor by my fellow councillors.
“This is an exciting time for our town, and I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
“I will do my utmost to continue the excellent work carried out by Cllr Terence Carter and the many town mayors who have served before me.”
At the same meeting, Cllr Darren Dordoy was elected as deputy town mayor.
Outgoing mayor Cllr Terence Carter reflected on his year in office with pride after raising £4,211.72 for his chosen charities, Red Gables and The Benjamin Foundation.
He said: “I’m deeply grateful to everyone who contributed — especially our leadership support officer, Sarah Ellice — and to all who offered their support throughout my term.
“It has been a tremendous honour to represent Stowmarket, and we’ve shared many enjoyable moments along the way.”
