Tevin Clarke, 29, brings Caribbean-inspired flavours to Stowmarket with Savannah Smoke Grill

A chef is continuing a family tradition by bringing Caribbean-inspired flavours to Suffolk through a new street food venture.

Tevin Clarke, 29, originally from Trinidad and Tobago, has launched Savannah Smoke Grill in Stowmarket — a mobile barbecue business serving bold dishes with a focus on rich flavours.

Tevin grew up surrounded by the aromas of his parents’ home-run food business back in Trinidad, where Saturday mornings meant grilling and selling meals from their garage, a humble beginning which eventually grew into a successful restaurant.

Now living in Stowmarket with his wife Stevie and their two-year-old daughter, Tevin said those experiences inspired him to start his own food journey.

“Cooking has always been a big part of my life,” he said. “Both my parents are chefs and restaurant owners and I have great memories of helping them cook and serve food from our garage as a child.

“That dream of running my own food business has stayed with me ever since. I wanted to carry on the tradition.

“So far all the feedback has been really great and I honestly can’t wait for more people to try my food as we grow and expand the business.”

Having trained at culinary school, Tevin recently launched Savannah Smoke Grill as a street food service, which operates from his home in Stowmarket but delivers to nearby villages and is expanding with pop-up events and catering across the county.

Dishes on the menu include boneless jerk chicken, tropical barbecue wings and Tevin’s personal favourite, Cajun Parmesan corn.

But for the chef, the new venture is about more than just flavour.

“This isn’t just about food — it’s about legacy,” he said. “Even my daughter is showing an interest already, asking about ingredients and watching me cook.

“I’m building something she can one day be part of. It’s a family tradition, reborn here in the UK.”
