More than 70 firefighters battle thatch blaze in Stonham Aspal, near Stowmarket.





More than 70 firefighters battled a thatched roof blaze near Stowmarket last night.

About 14 fire crews were called to a house on the A1120 Stowmarket Road, in Stonham Aspal, at 11.44pm yesterday.

The incident was led by Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, with support from Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, with about 75 firefighters called to the scene.

Firefighters worked overnight to introduce fire breaks and remove thatch from the roof to dampen the flames.

Stowmarket Road was also closed while the incident was being dealt with, but reopened at about 5am.

A stop was called at 11.30am.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said there were no casualties.

A full investigation into the blaze is due to be carried out today.
