The Food Museum in Stowmarket have opened new Hedgerow exhibition to the public

A museum has launched an exhibition that explores hedgerows’ role in food development and how hedges came to be over hundreds of years.

The Food Museum in Stowmarket has opened its latest exhibition titled Hedgerow.

The display is the first exhibition to be held in the newly refurbished William Bone Building. It will be open to the public from today and will remain at the museum until June 2023.

Angus D Birditt, Hedgerow curator and co-founder of artist collective ‘Our Isles’, said: “It’s taken about two weeks to hang everything and make finishing touches to the exhibition. It’s been really great.

“I work quite organically and I’ve curated an exhibition for an art gallery before - but putting something on for a museum is completely different.

“It’s been a real team effort. I didn’t really appreciate the practical side of things with hanging the artwork, getting the walls up and spirit levelling the frames. The space has come a long way since I first saw it over a year ago.”

Hedgerow has been funded by Arts Council England and New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership and will see a collection of paintings, poetry, photography, printmaking and film.

The exhibition explores how the hedgerow has developed through time and is the combined effort of artists, chefs, farmers and historians.

Museum director Jenny Cousins said: “Hedgerow includes the works and perspectives of over 25 artists and briefs - both new artists and established.

“It explores the intersection between nature and culture. Hedges are a man-made environment brought about as a result of our food system.

“We felt this would be a fitting first exhibition for this space as it shows how involved we want food to be in the museum. We want to explore more things that are connected by food.”

This new exhibition is one of many that the Food Museum has been working on.

The team have also put together the River Sculpture Trail that shows eight natural art installations along a woodland path.

Alongside this, the Alton Watermill has been restored to working condition and the new ‘Grow Area' sees crops, an orchard and animals on the museum’s grounds.

Jenny added: “The William Bone Building will hold our new gallery for changing annual exhibitions. We’ve not had a space like this at the museum before so we’re really excited about the potential it has.

“It will enable us to bring in more interactive exhibitions that incorporate taste, smell and touch - not just something to look at.

“We wanted to make these changes that you see today in 2018. A lot of ideas have been incorporated into our vision which is still changing and will no doubt continue to change as the result of feedback.”
