Former Ford Newsagency, in Stowmarket, can become residential as Mid Suffolk District Council approves change of use plans

A former newsagents in Stowmarket can become a home, after planning permission was granted.

The ground floor of the grade II-listed property at 3 Combs Ford was previously retail/commercial and operated as Ford Newsagency, but is to be repurposed as a family living room after Mid Suffolk District Council planners gave the nod.

Applicant Russell Sheldon said the former newsagents space had been unused for three years and marketed without interest.

A planning statement said: “The property has historically been used as a shop, however given current market conditions and personal circumstances, there is no practical need or viable demand for commercial use within a family home.

“The proposed change aligns with the residential nature of the property and the surrounding area.”

The building was constructed in around 1600, originally built as two shops with flats above.

A preservation statement said: “We have chosen to keep 3 Combs Ford unchanged because we deeply appreciate its historic character, original features and architectural integrity.

“As custodians of a grade II-listed building, we recognise the significance of preserving its unique heritage for future generations.”
