Residents evacuated from block of flats, off Ipswich Street in Stowmarket, after fire in underground car park




Residents were evacuated from a block of flats after a motorbike fire in an underground car park in Stowmarket.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the incident at 8.36pm yesterday in Dukes Meadow View, off Ipswich Street.

A spokesperson said a motorcycle caught fire, activating the block’s fire alarm and causing residents to evacuate.

The fire activated the building’s sprinkler system and firefighters, wearing breathing equipment, used a hose reel jet to extinguish it.

The cause of the blaze was accidental.

Four engines attended initially – from Princes Street in Ipswich, Needham Market, Elmswell and Debenham - but this was reduced to two.

The incident was dealt with by 9.52pm.
