Stowmarket Christmas Fayre cancelled over safety concerns due to Storm Bert

Stowmarket’s highly-anticipated Christmas Fayre has been cancelled due to safety concerns as Storm Bert threatens to bring strong winds to the county.

Stowmarket Town Council has just announced the decision, citing significant risks posed by the forecasted gusts — not only to attendees during the event, but also to crews setting up on Saturday and early Sunday morning.

The council highlighted specific concerns for traders using gazebos and fairground rides, which are unable to operate safely in high wind conditions.

A spokesperson for the council said: “With deep regret, we announce the cancellation of this Sunday’s Stowmarket Christmas Fayre due to the likely impact of Storm Bert and associated weather warnings.

“The safety and comfort of traders, staff, visitors, and performers are our top priorities.

“With the Stowmarket Christmas Fayre typically attracting large crowds, we must take every precaution to ensure everyone’s wellbeing.”

While the main Stowmarket Christmas Fayre event will not go ahead, there are still festive activities for the community to enjoy within the town centre at local venues.

Santa’s Christmas Cracker Show at The Regal will take place as scheduled on Sunday and other venues will provide updates on their own individual plans.

The spokesperson added: “This difficult decision was made following careful discussions and advice from various agencies.

“We deeply appreciate the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in planning this event and are saddened to have to cancel.

“We thank you for your understanding and continued support.”

The town council has also cancelled the market on Saturday due to Storm Bert.
