Caravans arrive at Stowmarket Recreation Ground in Finborough Road

A number of Travellers have pitched up on a town’s playing fields — the second incident at the site in the space of two months.

Caravans have arrived at Stowmarket Recreation Ground, known as The Rec, in Finborough Road, prompting the town council to take legal steps to have the group removed.

In May, a similar encampment was cleared from the same location after being handed an enforcement notice, while another group at Stowupland’s village green led to the cancellation of a planned VE Day beacon lighting.

Caravans were also spotted in Stowupland again yesterday, though they had left the site as of this morning.

On social media, a town council spokesperson said: "We are working closely with the police and all relevant agencies have been informed.

“Please be assured that the necessary legal steps are being taken to resolve the situation, in accordance with the law, and to ensure the site is vacated at the earliest legal opportunity.

“We will keep the community updated as further information becomes available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
