A 52-year-old man has been charged with assault and possessing illegal weapons, following an incident at a Lavenham pub at the start of this year.

John Raines, of Langham Road in Boxted, has been charged with common assault, affray, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of a taser, which is a Section 5 firearm.

He is scheduled to appear before Ipwich Magistrates Court on July 30.

The charges are in connection to an incident at the Angel in Market Place in Lavenham on Monday, January 8, when police were called out following reports that a man had entered the premises with prohibited and offensive weapons.

A summary review of the premises licence issued to the Angel took place after the incident, in accordance with the Licensing Act 2003, and the designated premises supervisor was consequently removed immediately.

This decision was upheld at a full review hearing conducted by the Babergh District Council Licensing Sub-Committee.

An application for a new designated premises supervisor was subsequently approved by the council, enabling the Angel to continue trading.
