Sudbury-based beer maker Mauldons Brewery voices pride in Suffolk after earning title of Best British Bitter at SIBA East Independent Beer Awards

A Sudbury-based beer maker has struck gold, picking up a top accolade for a brew which it says shows the company’s proud roots in Suffolk.

Mauldons Brewery, based in Church Field Road, earned the title of Best British Bitter for its Suffolk Pride real ale at the recent Society of Independent Brewers’ (SIBA) East Independent Beer Awards.

The recognition at regional level will see the business advance to the national SIBA awards, for a chance at further success.

Richard Naisby, chairman of SIBA, said: “Judges had a tough job separating the pack as the standard was extremely high once again.

“The winners from the SIBA competition are officially the best independent cask beers in the eastern region, something brewers should be extremely proud of.”

The Nedging Hall Estate, which owns Mauldons Brewery, voiced its pride at receiving such strong recognition from fellow brewers and industry experts.

Suffolk Pride will now go on to compete in the national final.

The organisation also emphasised its ethos of putting sustainability at the heart of its practices, including growing the barley for its beers on the local family farm just a few miles from its brewery.

It explained that the spent grains are then fed to red poll cattle, a rare Suffolk breed, before the beef is used in the estate’s local pubs, including The Brewery Tap in Sudbury, The Lindsey Rose and The Bildeston Crown.

Charlie Buckle, managing director of Nedging Hall Estate, said: “I am immensely proud of the team at Mauldons Brewery.

“This award is recognition of the hard work that goes in to producing a delicious pint of Suffolk Pride.

“I look forward to the national competition, where we will take Suffolk Pride and hope to come back to Sudbury with a trophy.

“I am also proud of Suffolk, the wonderful heritage, hospitality and countryside that we are so lucky to enjoy every day, so to win with a beer named after the county is brilliant.”
