Bury St Edmunds man dies in police custody after Newmarket arrest

A 29-year-old man from the Bury St Edmunds area has died after he became unwell whilst in police custody.

Police were called to Tesco, Fordham Road, Newmarket, after receiving reports of a theft having taken place at around 6pm yesterday, Thursday 24 December.

Officers attended and he was arrested on suspicion of theft from the store and taken into custody at Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre. A short time later concerns were raised for his well-being and he was taken to the West Suffolk hospital.

He was pronounced deceased late on Christmas Eve.

A full investigation into the circumstances around the man’s death is underway and a post mortem examination will be held in due course.

As is standard procedure where there has been a death following police contact, the IPCC have been informed.
