Charity concerts at Quay Theatre in Sudbury result in donation of more than £4,000 to My Wish Charity at West Suffolk Hospital

Fundraising concerts held in Sudbury over the last three years have resulted in a donation of more than £4,000 in support of breast cancer patients.

A total of £4,115 was handed over to the My Wish Charity at West Suffolk Hospital, following a series of gigs staged at the Quay Theatre, organised by Robbie and Julie Gladwell.

The couple, who live in Belchamp Walter, pulled together a range of musicians and singers for the events, most recently two packed-out shows on January 24 and 25, which brought in £1,230 through charity auctions and raffles held on both nights.

They are now planning another concert for the benefit of the hospital charity, titled The Big Birthday and Very Special Friends Show, to coincide with Robbie’s 70th birthday, which they hope will be able to go ahead in St Peter’s on Market Hill in June, subject to how the coronavirus pandemic develops over the coming months.

It marks the latest in a series of fundraising efforts that are close to the couple’s hearts, which began after Julie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007.

She initially underwent treatment for the disease at Colchester Hospital, and subsequently helped to raise thousands of pounds for the facility in the following years.

But in 2017, after being in contact with members of the My Wish team, she decided to start supporting the charity, to give a funding boost to the breast cancer unit at West Suffolk Hospital.

“The reason I started raising money for West Suffolk is that I love the My Wish team and, if you live anywhere in the Sudbury area, it’s the hospital that most people use,” she said.

“It’s a great little hospital and I have a great rapport with the My Wish girls.

“The two concerts in January were full houses and the tickets sold out so quickly.

“Now we’re planning ahead for the special concert for Robbie’s birthday in June.

“We try to organise these concerts once a year and Robbie spends weeks and weeks organising the music and orchestrating the evening itself.”

The concert is currently planned for Saturday, June 6, at 8pm, with tickets available by calling 01256 416384 or 07795 387108.

Sue Smith, head of fundraising at the My Wish Charity, added: “We cannot thank Robbie and Julie enough.

“They have done so much for the breast unit, who are extremely grateful.

“The evenings that they put on really do take so much to organise and people are so generous with their time and their talent.

“We are very excited about Robbie’s birthday concert and urge people to get tickets while they still can, as it really will be a fantastic night.”
