A church in Assington is to benefit from more than £37,000 of after securing funding from a government scheme.

The Church of St Edmund is one of 18 applicants in Suffolk which have received a cash boost as part of the government’s £55 million Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund.

The successful applications, which accounts for £30 million of the fund, will allow 502 churches across the UK to carry out urgent repair work to roofs, gutters and stonework.

Matthew Hancock, the Conservative candidate for West Suffolk, said he was delighted by the amount of churches in Suffolk which will benefit.

“Churches are unique and treasured buildings in our local communities so it is only right that we do all we can to support them,” he said.

The fund will reopen to new applications later this year.
