A school’s ambition to ensure that students continued to benefit from creative opportunities during life in lockdown has seen it short-listed for a prestigious education award.

Thomas Gainsborough School (TGS) has made it to the final eight in the Creative School of the Year category in the TES School Awards.

Staff at the Great Cornard secondary school have spoken of their delight at being recognised for the award.

Assistant headteacher Ed Clark said: “We have always been very proud of the creative opportunities we have offered to students.

“The last year has been challenging for us all, but we didn’t want the lockdowns – and the move to largely online learning – to prevent these opportunities from taking place.

“Staff have gone above and beyond and we would also like to thank our partners who have helped provide such a rich and varied creative curriculum.”

Over the last year, TGS students have benefited from a series of online resources and creative mini-sessions, as well as partnership projects.

The school worked with the Wellcome Trust on an arts and science collaboration, and the Protein Data Bank in Europe on an online art exhibition.

Mr Clark added: “We have made the most of a difficult situation and we aim to continue using some of the lessons learned from the last year.

“We have also been able to share some of our resources and learnings with other schools across the country.”

The winners of the TES School Awards will be announced during an online event on Friday, June 25.
