Big Night Out fireworks event allowed to continue at Melford Hall for 2022 following National Trust U-turn

A popular charity fireworks night has been saved from the threat of cancellation, after a U-turn from the host venue allowed it to continue for this year.

The National Trust confirmed it had reached an agreement with organisers of Long Melford's Big Night Out, to enable the long-running annual event to take place at Melford Hall on November 11.

Last month, the trust withdrew permission for the Big Night Out to be held on the site – despite it having taken place there for 48 years – due to concerns about the impact on archaeologically-sensitive areas.

However, following a backlash from the Long Melford community, a short-term arrangement was agreed with organisers Project Seven and the Hyde Parker family, the current tenants at Melford Hall.

Leigh Freeman, general manager at the grade II listed hall, said: "The National Trust, the Hyde Parker family and Project Seven have come to an agreement that will allow the 2022 Big Night Out to take place in its current location, with adjustments in place to ensure that the ground conditions are protected.

"It was always our hope that a solution could be found that benefited the community and ensured the more sensitive area of the park was protected.

"We are really keen to support future events on the parkland and will work with the community to facilitate these."

Amy Hyde Parker added: "This may be the last time that the Big Night Out will take place at Melford Hall, but we, the Hyde Parkers, hope to work with Project Seven in the future on other events, which will allow their good work to continue to support Long Melford.

"We are continuing to work on the other events for 2023 and the organising teams for these events are being kept updated.

"We look forward to welcoming you all to Melford Hall Park on 11th November – and let’s make sure the night goes with a bang."

Despite this announcement, villagers have continued to voice their concerns about the future of the Big Night Out, as well as other major public events hosted at Melford Hall, beyond 2022.

Residents and parish councillors held a demonstration on the green opposite the hall entrance this afternoon, calling on the National Trust to agree a long-term solution.
