Long Melford's Big Night Out cancelled after unexploded bombs found at National Trust site
The unexpected discovery of unexploded bombs at a National Trust site has forced a last-minute cancellation of a popular annual fireworks night.
Long Melford's Big Night Out – a long-running event which raises thousands of pounds for local causes – was due to take place on Friday night at Melford Hall.
However, this morning, it was announced on social media that the occasion could not go ahead for safety reasons, after three bombs were found at the historic site on Wednesday.
Amy Hyde Parker, whose family holds the lease to Melford Hall, wrote on Facebook: "On November 9, three unexploded bombs were found on the park at Melford Hall.
"These have been safely removed, but unfortunately this has raised concern that there are potentially more.
"For the safety of all, we have had to cancel the event."
The announcement is a major blow for the Big Night Out, which had already been cancelled once this year, after the National Trust withdrew permission for it to be held at Melford Hall, only to U-turn on this decision following a community backlash.
