First look inside new Sudbury Town Hall ceremony room overlooking Market Hill

A new ceremony room inside Sudbury Town Hall that offers a 'more personal' space for celebrations has seen its first couple wed.

Couples can now tie the knot in a register office ceremony within the new Mayor's Parlour room, which overlooks the market square.

Offering marriages or civil partnerships, the room's ground floor location makes it more accessible for guests.

Ceremonies used to take place in The Assembly Rooms, which is larger than the Mayor's Parlour, and it is hoped this downsize will help create a more bespoke and intimate experience.

Cllr Bobby Bennett, Cabinet Member for Equality and Communities, said: "I would like to thank the team at Sudbury Town Council for the opportunity and for facilitating our move to the Mayor’s Parlour.

"We are really pleased to be able to offer couples this much more personal ceremony space within Sudbury Town Hall."

The Mayor’s Parlour offers seating for 28 guests plus the couple and a photographer or videographer.

Ciaran Griffin, Town Clerk for Sudbury, said: "The Mayor’s Parlour and the classic Greek style of the Town Hall provide the perfect setting for these very special occasions and are beautiful backdrops for photos.

"There is also a fantastic choice of hospitality venues nearby that couples could choose for their receptions and celebrations."

Blanka and Michael Roberts, the first couple to tie the knot at the Mayor’s Parlour, said: "We were honoured when we learned that we would be the first couple to be married in the Mayor's Parlour.

"It's a lovely space and has been beautifully done out with splendid artwork on the walls, too.

"One painting in particular, The Moorhen's Nest, highlighted the importance of supporting each other, which really made us smile and seemed very fitting for a marriage!

"Everyone at the Town Hall was so kind and we couldn't have wished for a nicer venue for our special day."

The Assembly Rooms will continue to be available for private hire. Couples should contact Suffolk Registration Service on 0345 607 2080 for more information on ceremonies.
