Chairman of Long Melford Football Club dies following short illness, club announces




The chairman of Long Melford Football Club has died following a short illness.

Mr Thomas was appointed chairman in 2020.

He died at home surrounded by his family on Monday evening.

In a statement, the club said: “Long Melford Football Cub are very saddened to announce the death of their esteemed chairman Geoff Thomas, who after a short illness, died at home in the presence of his family at 7pm on Monday, January 13.

“The Club offer their sincere and best wishes to all his family.

“Details relating to the funeral will be announced later.

“In the interim Club Secretary Russell Meekings and Club Hon President Richard Kemp, will take over the many roles served by Geoff Thomas

“The Club will support Geoff’s family at this incredibly tough time.”

Mr Thomas took over as chairman, from Colin 'Alf' Woodhouse.

He has previously been the chair of Essex & Suffolk Border League club Boxted Lodgers and Hedinghams United with a wealth of football experience.

In his playing days he was in the youth squad at Queen's Park Rangers before going on to play for non-league side Hendon.

Also a Level-2 FA Licensed coach, he helped develop players of all ages.

He has also coached at Halstead Town Under-18s, Alresford Colne Rangers and Hedinghams United.

Long Melford is pne of England's oldest football clubs.

Its 1st Team and U23's play in the Thurlow Nunn League.

Both teams will remember Geoff over their next fixtures.
