The Kings Head Inn, in Bures Road, Great Cornard, set to be repaired after fire
A Grade II-listed village pub which was severely damaged in a fire is set to be repaired.
On March 6, a blaze took hold in The Kings Head Inn, in Bures Road, Great Cornard, which is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault in a consumer unit over the bar servery.
It then spread to an extension and took hold in the roof.
Now, Mr C Sparkes, on behalf of Greene King Pub Partners, has applied to Babergh District Council to under take extensive repairs to the pub.
Under the plans – part of which are informed by a structural engineer’s report – a fresh like-for-like oak framing would be installed.
The tiles on the extension will be replaced with Ashvale handcrafted tiles from Lifestiles. The brewery has decided, while the pub is closed and scaffolded and the repairs done, the main roof section will be refitted.
The existing tiles will be salvaged and re-used and combined with around 40 per cent of reclaimed tiles from J Purdey and Sons reclamation yard.
In the days after the blaze, Babergh District Council was invited to the site.
Katherine Pannifer, from the authority, attended to review the damage and discuss the repairs with the pub chain.
Greene King hopes, as the plans are simple in form and revolve around the reinstatement of the building after a fire, they will be seen in a favourable light.
In the weeks following, The Kings Head has been made as safe as possible. This includes the scaffolding as well as hoardings, and it has been given a ‘tin-hat’ to protect it from the weather.
It added, as the materials are to match those which were lost in the blaze, this should add to it.
The Kings Head dates back to the 18th century. It has a two storey section facing the road, the single storey extension and a car park at the back.
Greene King praised the ‘swift actions’ of the pub’s staff and the emergency services in the wake of the blaze, which six fire crews were called to.
No-one was injured.
