High street barriers removed in Lavenham just one day after being installed as social distancing measure

Barriers were taken down from the side of footpaths in Lavenham, just one day after they were erected as a social distancing measure.

Suffolk Highways put the waist-high fences alongside High Street on Tuesday, to stop cars parking on the path – and forcing pedestrians together.

But on Wednesday, the authority took down the barriers.

A statement did not reveal why other than to state: “Temporary emergency measures are being implemented that are under constant review.

“The situation regarding the temporary emergency traffic management in Lavenham has been reviewed and is being adjusted to suit local conditions.”

The statement added that cones would be kept at points in the road to stop cars from parking.

Cllr Margaret Maybury, who represents Lavenham for Babergh District Council, said: “Residents should be safe and we need to do the best we can.”
