Man detained for questioning as part of Sudbury rape investigation

A man has been arrested and detained for questioning, as the investigation into a serious sexual assault in Sudbury continues.

Detectives were granted a warrant by Ipswich Magistrates court this morning, to detain a 28-year-old man until tomorrow afternoon, after he was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of rape.

The suspect remains at Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for further questioning, in relation to an incident at 3.30am on Monday, May 28, where an 18-year-old girl was sexually assaulted near an area of grassland between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

Officers have subsequently carried out checks around Sudbury, with patrols taking place at the weekend in East Street, Waldingfield Road, First Avenue and Second Avenue.

The Suffolk Police Major Investigation Team has also renewed its appeal for information from members of the public, who may be able to assist the ongoing investigation.

They are particularly keen to from anybody who may have dash-cam or mobile phone footage taken in the East Street and Waldingfield Road areas of the town on May 28, between 2am on 6am.
