Wall repairs begin in Cornard Road, near Belle Vue Park, in Sudbury, as motorists face six weeks of temporary traffic lights

Essential repairs to a town wall have begun with a council warning drivers to expect six weeks of potential delays due to temporary traffic lights.

Works to the wall in Cornard Road, running along Belle Vue Park, in Sudbury, began on Monday with a traffic light-controlled single lane in place until Friday, July 11.

The project, led by Babergh District Council, involves rebuilding sections of two retaining walls, laying new brickwork and backfilling while UK Power Networks is also using the opportunity to address legacy cabling from a former substation.

A council spokesperson said the repairs cannot be done from inside the park so part of the road must be closed to ensure the safety of both road users and workers.

They said: “We were keen to avoid closing the road completely, so have brought in a professional traffic management company to manage the single lane closure as effectively and efficiently as possible – however some disruption is inevitable on such a busy road.

“Our advice is to allow extra time for journeys, obey the lights and please bear with us while we carry out this essential work.”

Concerns have been raised on social media about traffic delays with residents calling for the lights to be manually controlled after reports of drivers jumping the lights and blocking oncoming vehicles — bringing traffic to a standstill.

A Babergh District Council spokesperson said the team is working to complete the repairs as quickly as possible to avoid disruption to upcoming events including the town council’s Party in the Park on Sunday, July 20, and Abbeycroft’s Community Fun Day on Tuesday, July 22.

However, they noted that some parts of the project, such as curing, are weather dependent.
