New action group in Sudbury calls for acts of kindness during Covid-19
Volunteers are being sought by a newly formed action group in Sudbury to provide vital support to vulnerable people during the coronavirus outbreak.
Key leaders from a range of charities, groups and churches in the town have joined forces to establish the Sudbury Community Network to offer a lifeline to individuals struggling to cope with the increasing challenges of the deadly disease.
The group hopes to attract a dedicated team of volunteers to demonstrate acts of kindness to those in need within their community.
Labour town councillor Louise Fowler, who spearheaded the initiative, said: “Sudbury is full of generous people. We want to find the most practical ways to help vulnerable neighbours in self-isolation, and in urgent need of contact, to know there is someone out there helping them through it.
“What does this look like? To begin with, it might be as simple as donating a toilet roll or two, or some nappies, offering to do a shop, or just phoning or texting them. We are looking at other ways to help, too.”
Ciaran Griffin, who is due to take over the role of town clerk in the coming weeks, said: “Our next steps include how to start building a sustainable network through trusted local charities, churches and community groups, many of whom are already well placed to steer our community through this developing crisis.”
Praising members of the community who had already rallied round, Mr Griffin added: “We are already seeing a great deal of goodwill and community spirit – we are off to a good start.”
