New Glemsford cake-making business Jade's Bakes goes down a treat
A Glemsford woman has established her own cake-making business – just three months after perfecting her baking skills.
During the coronavirus lockdown, Jade Johnston was furloughed from her family’s firm at Reiten Motorrad, a motorbike dealership in Lower Road.
Keen to keep herself occupied while remaining indoors, Miss Johnston spent three months baking a range of cakes.
“I have always enjoyed cooking and I had all this spare time on my hands, so I started baking,” said Miss Johnston, of Bells Lane.
Determined to make her partner’s birthday special, Miss Johnston baked him an extravagant cake.
“I couldn’t afford to fork out on an expensive cake, but I wanted to give him something nice,” she said.
Impressed by her baking skills, Miss Johnston’s partner, Ethan, encouraged her to sell her home-made goods.
After posting pictures of her cakes online, Miss Johnston received multiple orders.
Shortly after launching Jade’s Bakes, the 25-year-old received an order for a three-tier wedding cake.
Delighted that a customer had confidence in her baking abilities to create a cake of great scale, Miss Johnston said: “I was really taken aback. It’s very flattering and it’s been quite overwhelming. I just wasn’t expecting that.”
Before deciding to train as an accountant, Miss Johnston gained key baking skills while working in a pastry department at a renowned hotel chain in Manchester, where she is originally from.
