A new slimming club hopes to help people shed the pounds and break any bad habits set during the Christmas period, when it launches next week.

Sam Higgs will stage the first classes of her latest Slimming World group in Long Melford on Monday, after identifying January as a key time of year for new members, as many people set a new year’s resolution to lose weight.

The benefits of group support to slimming down have been experienced first hand by Sam, who lost over six stone after joining Slimming World seven years ago.

This inspired her to become a consultant in April 2020, initially helping clients remotely through Zoom during lockdown, before leading face-to-face sessions once restrictions lifted.

Following the successful return of her Sudbury group, she told Suffolk News she wanted to help spread the support further for Long Melford residents in the new year.

“It’s definitely a key thing for January,” said Sam, of Great Cornard. “It’s our busiest time, because it’s typically when people make that decision that they want to lose weight.

“I’ve been a member myself for seven years, a consultant for two years and it has changed my life.

“We’ve had a tough 18 months because of lockdown, then opening and then closing again. We did run on Zoom during lockdown, but it’s not quite the same.

“We can all say, ‘I will lose weight at home’, but it’s a bit harder. Having that network around you of people in the same situation is invaluable.

“We’ve opened again in Sudbury with Covid-secure measures, and we’ve had a really positive response.

“Now, we just want to open things back up for people in Long Melford. We only announced it last week and we’ve already got 30 to 40 people on the list who want to come along.”

The Slimming World group will meet at the Long Melford Royal British Legion every Monday, at 5.30pm and 7pm.

Sessions will take place with safety measures, such as social distancing and regular hand sanitising, and Sam added that they may add a third time slot if demand is high, to avoid overcrowding.
