Nicki awarded top honour for charity work

A nurse has been named as a national charity’s volunteer of the year for her tireless efforts in raising public awareness.

Nicki Garrard was presented with the award by Epilepsy Action at the charity’s national volunteer awards ceremony in Leeds last week.

A qualified nurse, Mrs Garrard has epilepsy herself and has been working as a volunteer since 1998. She is currently branch officer for the West Suffolk branch in Bury St Edmunds.

The charity recognised the many epilepsy-awareness events she has organised, praising her knowledge, presentation style and “infectiously positive attitude”.

Mrs Garrard, who lives in Davidson Close, Great Cornard, said: “I’m touched to receive this award from Epilepsy Action.

“Knowing that my role plays a part in improving the lives of other families affected by epilepsy is very rewarding.”

With Mrs Garrard’s support, the West Suffolk branch has put on many awareness and information sessions in the county.

Her energy and networking skills have been credited with boosting public knowledge and awareness of epilepsy across Suffolk.

In November 2013, she co-chaired a successful East of England strategic clinical network neurology event and recently contributed to the production of an accident and emergency leaflet for East of England hospitals.

As well as her campaigns, Mrs Garrard also supports people living with epilepsy.
