PICTURES: Sunshine draws thousands to Long Melford Street Fair

The organiser of an annual street fair in Long Melford has hailed the event a success after thousands of people descended on the village last weekend.

Up to 15,000 visitors joined the event last Sunday as temperatures soared to more than 25º Celsius.

“It was an amazing turnout,” said Stuart Poole, chairman of Long Melford street fair volunteer group. “It was absolutely heaving until 7pm.”

Attractions on the day included performances by the East Suffolk Morris Men, the Samboomba band and rock band Cakehole Mafia.

Sudbury Rock Choir delivered a powerful performance, with up to 170 members taking part.

Youngsters were treated to a traditional Punch and Judy show, fair ground rides and a bungy trampoline.

Vintage cars were also on show, including a replica of a Victorian railway carriage.

Mr Poole, who has been part of the street fair committee for the last three years, may stand down next year due to the level of work involved.

He is hoping more volunteers will step in to continue the event in the future.

“I’m very passionate about it,” said Mr Poole. “I would like it to carry on.”
