Plans to convert Little Haven, in Water Lane, Cavendish, to children’s home approved by West Suffolk Council

Plans to convert a village property to a children’s home have been approved despite a swathe of public objections.

West Suffolk Council green lit the proposals from Klaud Pasik for the home in Water Lane, Cavendish, yesterday.

The detatched house, described as a large property, will be used to house up to four children, between the ages of five and 12, at one time under the proposals.

The home will be used to provide care for children and focus on providing specialist support for children facing emotional and behavioural challenges.

It is hoped the home will create a nurturing environment where children can find stability, guidance and the help they need to navigate life successfully.

Alongside four comments of support for the plans, 13 members of the public lodged objections to the application.

The main concerns listed were of noise, safety concerns for the children living there, highway safety, the structural integrity of the property, it setting an undesired precedent for the village and the potential impact on residential amenity.

Cavendish Parish Council supported the plans subject to a condition restricting the number of children on the site at any one time.

Planners noted the intensity and scope of proposed occupation as a children’s home would not be much different to what is expected from a typical large house.

The home will be occupied by four children at once alongside a maximum of four non-resident staff in the day and two at night.

The home manager will work Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Visitors to it will be managed and allowed on site by appointment only.

Planners said the presence of at least two staff on site 24 hours a day would be enough to prevent adverse impacts arising from noise and disturbance at the property.

The application was approved subject to conditions on a time limit for starting the development, sufficient parking space, adequate bin storage and a maximum of four children and five staff at the site.
