Kingfisher Leisure Centre pool in Sudbury will reopen in time for February half term

A town swimming pool popular with families will reopen this weekend after a five month closure.

The pool at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre, in Sudbury, will reopen on Saturday, after being closed since the end of August.

While the rest of the leisure centre has remained open, work has been carried out on the glass roof of the building.

Repairs were needed after a glass panel directly above the pool broke

Structural work has also been completed on the pool and some of the tiling has been replaced.

The leisure centre is owned by Babergh District Council and operated by not-for-profit social enterprise Abbeycroft.

Cllr Laura Smith, Babergh’s cabinet member for thriving communities, said it will be ‘fantastic’ to see swimmers back in the water.

“We are really sorry for the disruption over the last six months, but it was essential we carried out this work – we always have to put people’s health and safety first.

“Our teams have worked hard to get the pool open again as soon as we could, and I’m delighted this will happen for half term,” said Cllr Smith.

Warren Smyth, chief executive of Abbeycroft, said: “I would like to apologise to all our customers for the inconvenience this has caused since August and thank everyone for their patience and understanding.”

The wave machine will be permanently closed when the rest of the pool reopens.

Some maintenance work will be carried out on the outside of the leisure centre in the coming weeks.

Casual swimming will resume from Saturday, with a full programme and lessons starting on Monday - the first day of half term.

Abbeycroft customers will be contacted directly for updates about their membership and more information about the programme and bookings can be found on their app or online here.
