Post box topper in Great Waldingfield pays tribute to fallen soldiers on Remembrance Day
A hand-crafted tribute to soldiers, who gave their lives fighting in the First World War, has found pride of place in the heart of a Suffolk village, ahead of the Remembrance Sunday commemorations.
A remembrance-themed post box topper was installed outside Great Waldingfield Shop and Post Office in Lavenham Road on Friday.
The display was the work of the Great Waldingfield Craft and Chat group, a regular gathering which formed earlier this year to bring together budding craft makers on a range of projects.
Co-founder Teri Rice, one of the four original members, said they had been inspired by the surge in post box toppers in recent years, as they became a popular creative activity for communities during the Covid-19 lockdown periods.
The Great Waldingfield group followed suit with their own toppers, marking events such as the Queen’s Jubilee, Hallowe’en and now Remembrance Day.
“There was a group of us who were quite like-minded with regards to crafting,” Teri told Suffolk News. “We all enjoyed it, so we decided to set up our own group,
“We had seen post box toppers around the country and decided to attempt one ourselves. Everything progressed from there.
“We meet twice a month, we chat, we laugh and we all get on. We often work on our individual projects, but there’s just a lovely sense of community, of being together and sharing in a hobby that we all enjoy.”
The Craft and Chat group meets at Great Waldingfield Bowls Club on the first Thursday of each month, from 7pm to 9pm, and the third Tuesday, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.
