Beauty Lounge salon in Long Melford urges men and boys to step up in support of Let's Nail Breast Cancer campaign

Men and boys of all ages have been getting out of their comfort zone this month after a Long Melford salon jumped on board with an annual cancer awareness initiative, with a unique twist.

The Beauty Lounge, based at Stafford House in Little St Mary’s, has pledged its support for the Let’s Nail Breast Cancer campaign, urging men to come in and get their nails painted to help raise money for Breast Cancer Now.

The fundraising drive, which is organised by the charity Future Dreams every October to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, has adopted a new approach to spread the word, amid the coronavirus pandemic, by making men the face of the campaign.

Although the vast majority of those affected by the disease are women, men can be diagnosed with breast cancer in rare cases.

Gemma Schwenk, owner of the Beauty Lounge, explained the cause is very close to her heart, having been inspired by her cousin and her best friend, who have both battled with cancer in recent times.

“We’re trying to spread awareness and trying to raise some money in a fun way,” she told the Free Press. “Obviously, with Covid, it’s a bit of a dreary time at the moment, so we wanted to do something a bit more positive.

“All of my boy mates have been so supportive. They are very brave for doing it, because I know that some guys would be worried about getting a lot of stick.

“There has been really great support. We’ve had lots of shares on social media.

“It’s nice to see the men getting behind it. Obviously, they can be affected as well, and it makes more people take a look.

“My best friend had breast cancer a couple of years ago, and my cousin called me two weeks ago to say that she had been given the all-clear. She went through her treatment all during Covid.

“Seeing what they have to go through for treatment, I can’t imagine how hard it must be for them. A lot of people are affected, so if we can help in even a small way, that would be great.”
