Station lift petition handed to rail bosses

A petition with 540 signatures calling for step-free access at Marks Tey train station has been presented to bosses at Network Rail.

The campaign – launched by Sudbury resident Theo Bird – hopes to modernise the station footbridge, which currently acts as an obstacle for those in a wheelchair or travelling with luggage.

The petition, which was launched through the campaign site 38 degrees, has been handed over to Network Rail as part of its Anglia route study public consultation.

Former Sudbury mayoress and wheelchair user Elaine Richmond, who handed over the petition, said: “On behalf of all petitioners, please may we have a bridge with lifts at Marks Tey as soon as is practicable.”

Mr Bird described the campaign, which began just under a month ago, as a “grass roots response” to the consultation and thanked all those who signed the petition.
