Sudbury couple praise community's support for open garden fundraiser in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care
A couple from Sudbury have praised the community’s support after hosting a successful fundraising event at the weekend.
Disappointed that this year’s Sudbury Open Gardens event had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Conrad Bentley and his wife, Colette, decided to stage their own two-day spectacle.
Around 90 visitors attended the event in Melford Road, which raised £502 for St Nicholas Hospice Care in Bury St Edmunds.
“The hospice, like many charities, has been struggling during the crisis,” said Mr Bentley, who was delighted by the turnout.
“We didn’t know how many people would come along because some people are still quite wary,” added the 67-year-old.
During the weekend event, visitors gained inspiring ideas from a range of ‘garden rooms’ on show.
One of the designs featured a mirror to create the illusion of a garden gate leading into an open space.
“They were popular during the 18th and 19th century,” said Mr Bentley, who was impressed by the creation at an open garden event he had previously visited.
